Why we need urgent funds for water sanitation

Recent events in north-eastern Sri Lanka has led to the displacement of 300,000 people who are currently being held in camps. There is a significant requirement for clean drinking water in these camps. Unsafe drinking water and inadequate sanitation facilities can give rise to water-borne diseases such as typhoid, cholera and dysentery and promote mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue fever, with children among the most vulnerable. These are the conditions facing the people in the camps. Working with Sky Juice we have identified a shortfall of approximately 400,000 litres of clean drinking water per day. Our project aims to fulfill this need by providing the necessary equipment. Many INGOs are providing large amounts of water already, however the sheer size of demand, for something as simple as clean drinking water means there is still a large requirement to be fulflled.

What Palmera is doing to address the need

Palmera Projects aims to raise funds to help meet the current shortfall in water fltration units in the IDP camps. $2 per day will give clean drinking water for up to approximately 2000 people. As an initial exercise to provide immediate relief, Palmera Projects in collaboration with Sky Juice has ordered five water filtration units (SkyHydrants) to the Manik Farm Camps. These units are being purchased in Australia from SkyJuice and will be shipped to Colombo. Palmera is working closely with Sky Juice to ensure that the units reach the camps safely.

Description of Partner

The SkyHydrant water purification unit was inspired by Siemens Water Technologies and is intended for affordable community water supply or disaster relief applications for production of clean drinking water. The SkyJuice water purification unit (SkyHydrant) is economical, compact, robust, easy to transport and ideal for remote locations. There are virtually no ongoing costs as the purification process does not require chemicals or power. The SkyHydrant can produce up to 1000 litres of clean water per hour depending upon the feed water and setup.  Following the tsunami in 2005, SkyJuice supplied and installed over 40 SkyHydrant water purification units across the effected areas. These units are still in use and some have been redeployed to the current IDP camps.
